My name is Shani Nealy and I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in the State of Oklahoma. I have been in the counseling field for almost five years and have more than three years of experience providing teletherapy services.
While working with clients, I use various methods depending on which would be most beneficial for the particular person. I have experience with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Narrative Therapy and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). Now, let’s break those down for an easier explanation that reveals how they can assist us as we begin teletherapy. CBT can help with depression, anxiety, and other problems by focusing on how a person's thoughts, beliefs, and attitudes affect their feelings and behaviors. Narrative Therapy is used in order to separate a person from their problem(s). It encourages a person to “re-write” the story of their life. Lastly, DBT is used in order to teach a person how to live in the moment, regulate their emotions, improve relationships with others and to cope with stress.
Sometimes people are nervous about therapy and not sure what to expect. I like to use therapy sessions as a way to have a conversation about current issues and concerns. I have found that some people have problems and don't realize there are technical terms and theories that match their issue. Once they learn the "other side" of their problems, it makes it easier to put those problems in check and be able to move on! I love it when this connection happens!
I have a rambunctious fur baby, a Yorkshire Terrier named Prince! I have a deep love for animals and dream to have enough land to become a foster home for dogs waiting for adoption. My mottos are "Life is Sweet" and #loveveryday and I really believe those!
CBT, Narrative and Solution Focused are the modalities I naturally gravitate to using.
Couples counseling (with one or both partners) and teenagers with anxiety/depression.
